Low Key Companion

Leaves crushing under foot and pedal steel open the sonic story that is the Jphono1 instrumental album “Low Key Companion”. A mixture of field recordings and beat based compositions occupy the same space to form a three-dimensional collage environment.

Improvisational porch jams, walks in the yard and other elements of found sounds in nature are combined with electronic manipulation. The present that was captured is transported and new forms are created.

“As I go on walks in the neighborhood or sit out on the porch they are my companions….low key…but always there with me. We are familiar with each other. We are different, we are the same.”

Beat based tracks “Sundown Glosson” Ode To Oaf Loaf” “Atonement Zen Blues” and “Poppy Patrol” act as a guide to gently lift the listener up and down from one environment to the next.

“From the names of the songs and the beats born in the studio to the sounds captured on the field recordings...this is my yard, my street, my neighborhood, my home. This is the music of a space I occupy.”

Jphono1 and friends explore new elements in sounds and arrangements with his fuzz-frayed folk-pop. Fragments of electronics, acoustic guitars, and keys join what at first resemble straight-forward compositions, only to break apart into unassuming lo-fi with casual psychedelia, finding a comfortable station at the intersection of Meat Puppets whimsy and Steve Gunn introspection. ... more
